Hanging Abstract Pyramid Sculpture

For this assignment, the class had to make an abstract sculpture out of different mediums which prominently features 2 Elements of Art and 1 Principle of Design. Elements of art and principles of design are fundamental ideas of visual design. The sculpture had to be atleast 56cm tall.

Steps

Step 1 : Firstly, I created 3 sketches of 3 different sculpture ideas I had. The sketches had the sculpture shown in several different angles such as the front view, side view, back view, bird's eye view etc. The sketches also had other possible ideas that were variations of the main idea.

Step 2 : I ended up choosing my second sketch as the sculpture I was going to make. So I drew the the cutouts of different shaped pyramids and then cut them out. I also got gold wire to attach all the pyramids together. Since I only had access to white paper then, I thought I could cut out different colored fabric to make my artwork less dull and more colorful. My art teacher, however, advised against and I listened to her - which later turned out to be an excellent decision.

Step 3 : I started using the wire to construct the structure from my sketch, however, the wire was much thinner and weaker than I had expected - making it was impossible for me to simply use one long wire to attach all the pyramids to stably. Therefore I used numerous small wires to build a stable structure and started attaching pyramids to it.

Step 4 : I attached all the pyramids to the structure I made from wires and spaced them evenly throughout the entire structure - making sure to have all the large pyramids a good distance away from each other.

Reflection

Something that went well in this sculpture was how it looked so different at each angle and the light falling at the surfaces of the triangles at different angles created a fascinating and mesmerizing sculpture. Even though it deviated from my initial plan, it turned out amazing. Something I could improve on it next time is my cutouts of the triangles. I drew cutouts which weren't measured accurately and therefore when I actually cut them out and tried to make them a pyramid, often it did not end up joining together and therefore I then had to modify it to make it fit. This resulted in inefficiency, me wasting time and most importantly a massive wastage of paper. I would also buy a little stronger and thicker wire next time so that I could mould them and have them stay in place without them being weighed down by the paper pyramids. I faced failure in the beginning of the creation of the sculpture because the wire wasn't thick enough to execute the plan in my sketch. How I dealt with this failure was that instead of becoming discouraged, I experimented to see the ways in which I could construct the wire and then tried to continue my sculpture with that and therefore the sculpture ended up looking even better than my plan.
