Portraiture Clothes

Phil Hansen is an artist who challenged himself to create art using unconventional materials (dandelion puffs, matches, live worms, hamburger grease) and canvases (a stack of Starbucks cups, his torso, bananas). In this assignment we also tried creating portraits from unusual objects.

Portraiture with Clothes

I first drew a sketch of girl made out of clothes. I then went to my younger sister's closet to find the most colorful clothes to make the girl's hair. A dress which was black and made of velvet was used to make her face. I made a few changes to the sketch such as making the girl hold artifical flowers and not giving her any facial features. I also used a black velvet scrunchie to show one of her hands that held the flowers so that the hand and the face color would match to show they both were her skin.

Portraiture with Beads

I drew my sketch for a face using beads, completely unaware that I only had very few beads left. This resulted in my final artwork being drastically different from my plan. The hair and the body, therefore, had to be made from alphabet beads, unfortunately. To differentiate between them, I used different colors for the hair and the clothes. For the face I used other colorful beads and I used 2 beads that had the letter 'O' as the eyes.

Portraiture with Plants and Pebbles

I created a sketch of a face using only pebbles, however, I ended up also using plants for this portrait. I tried using pebbles to make the hair but it just ended up looking like a blob and so I used plants instead and used pebbles only for the face. I used two white pebbles for the eyes to distinguish them from the grey pebbles on the face

Portraiture with Paper and Bobby Pins

I originally drew an incredibly boring sketch of a boy made of several pieces of paper since I had run out of ideas. Then I found some of my mom's curved bobby pins and used them as hair. I used crumbled up paper for his skin and after finishing it, it looked like he had textured skin.

Reflection

The portraiture with the clothes turned out really well and the spontaneous changes made it better than the plan. Something I can improve on the next time I do this is: seeing if I have the necessary materials to use in the artwork before making a plan which uses them. I faced failure while making the artwork with beads and the artwork with pebbles. For the artwork with beads, I didn't have as many beads as I expected and therefore had limited resources. I dealt with this failure by persevering and then I got the idea to separate the beads by color and shape and used different shapes and colors for the head, face, eyes and body. Although this still wasn't my most successful artwork, my perseverance stopped me from giving up and helped me still go for it. For the artwork with the pebbles, despite all the efforts the pebbles simply did not look like a face and hair. Therefore, I improvised and used plants for the hair which was a major improvement and a great decision.
