For this assignment, had to make a sketchbook cover with our name on it.
Step 1 : Firstly, I brainstormed a bunch of ideas I had and then made 5 preliminary designs. The first one is a reflection of the moon and a bridge over the lake, the second one is a narrow gate with flowers over it, the third one is a girl in black and white standing in the gloomy breeze, the fourth one is a bicycle with flowers in the basket. I also experimented with different mediums such as pencil, color pencil and watercolors.
Step 2 : Since I felt like I tried relatively more complicated ideas in my previous preliminary designs that didn't turn out that well, I tried an easier one that I would turn out well. So for my 5th preliminary I simply used q-tips to paint a flower.
Step 3 : Since my art teacher said it was too simple and that I should add designs to the border, I added flower patterns to the borders. I also very lightly shaded the background with pink and yellow color pencils.
Something that turned out extremely well in this artwork was the borders with the indian flower patterns. Something I can improve on next time is choose leaves that would suit the flower since the ones I drew most certainly did not. I faced a lot of failure which making my prelimnary designs. Although I put in a lot of effort and time, the designs did not turn out as well as I had expected. To be fair, I had chosen more complicated designs but I was still disappointed. I dealt with the failure by trying a preliminary design which was rather simple to do - the opposite the other ones I had tried. This one turned out really well. I made the decision to choose the simpler one and spend more time perfecting it and adding details to it than choose a harder one which would probably not turn out well. This was a great idea because I also realised that when you look at art, you don't see its difficulty level and how well a person did based on that but rather you look at its beauty. I learnt that even if an artwork was simple to make, it can outshine and be more beautiful than some of the more complicated artworks.
